Honoring Veterans: Legion Poppy Project

Kinette Club of Stonewall

In Stonewall, Manitoba, a quiet but close-knit town, a simple yet powerful tribute blooms every year, reminding the community of the sacrifices made by veterans. The Kinette Club of Stonewall, dedicated to service and community, plays a pivotal role in this tribute through their involvement in the Legion Poppy Project, a heartfelt initiative that symbolizes remembrance, gratitude, and collective community efforts.

Bringing the Tradition to Stonewall

The Legion Poppy Project first took root in Niagara Falls in 2020, and in 2022, the Kinette Club of Stonewall (The Kinettes) proudly brought the initiative to their town. Partnering with the local Legion, the Kinettes took up the challenge of creating thousands of handcrafted poppies, each one meticulously knitted or crocheted by club members. Following patterns provided by the Legion, the Kinettes crafted over 2,000 poppies to adorn the walls of the Legion building in honor of Remembrance Day.

The stunning display, which covered two outer walls and one interior wall of the Legion, was a breathtaking visual tribute. The interior wall served an especially important role, providing a solemn backdrop for the Legion’s Members Night, where poppies were sold in memory of fallen soldiers. This touching event allowed community members to honor veterans and contribute to the ongoing support of the Legion’s efforts.

A Growing Legacy of Remembrance

The Kinette Club of Stonewall’s involvement did not end with one display. Every year, the club continues to add to the project, contributing new poppies or replacing those that have worn with time. In their third year of participation, the Kinettes contributed an impressive 245 new poppies to the display. The Kinettes are dedicated to ensuring the project continues to grow and flourish, just like the legacy of those it honors.

The project’s impact goes beyond the local community, receiving wider recognition when a Winnipeg TV station featured the poppy display in a news broadcast. This not only shined a spotlight on the hard work of the Kinettes but also highlighted the significance of the project in honoring veterans across Canada.

The Power of Collective Effort

The Legion Poppy Project is more than just an art installation—it is a labour of love that unites the Stonewall community in remembrance. Each poppy represents hours of dedication from club members, who pour their time and effort into creating these symbols of sacrifice. But the impact is greater than impact is greater than the sum of its parts. By working alongside the local Legion and receiving support from the broader community, the project demonstrates the power of collective effort. Together, the Kinettes and their neighbors are ensuring that veterans are never forgotten.

Honoring Those Who Served

For the Kinette Club of Stonewall, participating in the Legion Poppy Project is an honor in itself. The project allows the club to contribute meaningfully to the community while paying tribute to those who have served and sacrificed for our country. Through their dedication and hard work, the Kinettes are helping to keep the spirit of remembrance alive, one handcrafted poppy at a time.
